Chelsea transfer news: Romelu Lukaku second-choice target, Jorginho offers update

Published on: 08 April 2021

While Chelsea still remain in the hunt for trophies this season, including the Champions League, they also have one eye on the next campaign.

Blues manager Thomas Tuchel has done a superb job getting the best out of the players he inherited from Frank Lampard.

But the former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain boss is understandably keen to bring his own targets too, with a new striker among his priorities.

There could also be a number of departures as well, with several first-team stars including Olivier Giroud facing uncertain futures at Stamford Bridge.

So, without further ado, here's the latest Chelsea transfer rumours...

Lukaku second-choice striker target

Romelu Lukaku endured a tough spell at Chelsea, having rarely been given a chance to impress, before he opted to leave for Everton in 2014.

So, it perhaps comes as a surprise that seven years later and the Blues are considering a swoop to bring the big Belgian - who is now starring in Italy - back to Stamford Bridge.

According to CalcioMercato, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has given the green light for Tuchel to sign a top centre-forward this summer.

It is claimed by the Italian publication that Lukaku is second-choice by Erling Haaland on their shortlist - and the Premier League club are even considering an opening offer of €100million (£86m) to sign their former star.

However Inter regard Lukaku as "unsellable", while it also remains to be seen whether the former Manchester United star would even consider a move back to English football.

Blues 'pursue' Dutch starlet

Chelsea are blessed with a star-studded midfield - including the likes of N'Golo Kante and Mason Mount.

But that's not stopping the west Londoners from assessing their options and, according to reports in Italy, Ajax starlet Ryan Gravenberch is among their targets.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the 18-year-old ace has impressed Blues chiefs with his battling performances in the middle of the park.

It is understood that Chelsea are one of three Premier League teams keeping tabs on the youngster, whose price tag of €35m will not put off Abramovich.

Gravenberch already has three caps for the Netherlands and the Blues are keen to do business with Ajax, despite seeing their last signing from the Dutch giants - Hakim Ziyech - struggle to settle in England.

Jorginho offers update on future

Jorginho has given a strong indication that he will remain with Chelsea this summer.

The Italy midfielder endured a frustrating start to the season, with Frank Lampard reluctant to hand him a regular spot in his starting XI.

But the former Napoli star has enjoyed better fortune under Tuchel and has become an integral player under the German, starting 10 of his 11 games in charge so far.

And despite rumours linking Jorginho with a return to Italy, the 29-year-old appears content with life in west London.

“Dude, I’ll tell you the truth. At the moment, how am I going to think about the future two years from now, having what I still have to play this season. Then the Euro is coming,” Jorginho told TNT Sports.

“So, honestly, there’s no way to think ahead. In fact, I’m very happy here. I’m really happy here. So I don’t think about anything else either. Now, at the moment, there’s no reason to think about what will happen in two years, for example."
