Newcastle United pushing to sign Sevilla defender Diego Carlos

Published on: 19 January 2022

Diego Carlos has agreed personal terms with Newcastle United, but Sevilla are not willing to lose one of their key players in January, even though they are unable to match the wages offered by the Premier League club.

The Brazilian centre-back is putting pressure on Sevilla to let him join the Magpies, yet sporting director Monchi is not willing to sell Diego Carlos, despite Newcastle raising their offer to over 35 million euros.

Julen Lopetegui has publicly expressed his desire for Sevilla's squad to be strengthened, and the possible departure of Diego Carlos would likely come as a tough blow, as injuries have lately taken their toll on the squad.

Another Sevilla centre-back who attracted interest from the Premier League last summer was Jules Kounde, as Chelsea were determined to sign the Frenchman, but the LaLiga Santander side refused to cash in on their talented defender.

Diego Carlos could leave next summer

Although Monchi is confident that Newcastle will not meet Sevilla's high demands, he is already looking at a few players who could come in and replace Diego Carlos in the event the 28-year-old makes the move to St James' Park.

Sevilla are willing to negotiate his departure next summer, but they don't want to part ways with one of their most important players midway through the season.
