Salah scores decisive penalty in shootout to send Egypt into AFCON quarter-finals

Published on: 26 January 2022

Egypt snuck into the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after beating the Ivory Coast 5-4 in a dramatic penalty shootout.

Despite the lack of goals, it was an exciting match with plenty of chances, despite the poor state of the pitch in Douala.

Ivory Coast suffered a major setback when Franck Kessie was taken off in the first half, whilst Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy was replaced in the 88th minute, having made a superb double save.

No goals were scored after 120 minutes, and there was nothing to separate the two sides until the third round of penalties.

Substitute keeper Gabaski saved Eric Bailly's spot-kick, which made the difference as Mohamed Salah stepped up to take Egypt's fifth penalty to send the Pharaohs through to the last eight.

Egypt will play Morocco on Sunday for a place in the AFCON semi-finals.
