Ghana's No. 1

Thomas can still get the Partey started at Arsenal

Published on: 17 December 2021

In many ways, Thomas Partey’s experiences through 14 months at Arsenal mirror those of the club he now represents. There is plenty of potential to be unlocked, of that there is no doubt, but eking said qualities out can be tricky.

Looking down the expensively assembled spine of the Gunners’ side – Aaron Ramsdale, Ben White, Martin Odegaard and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – many of the right pieces appear to be in place. The same is true for Partey as a man who ticks a number of important Premier League boxes.

Unfortunately for all concerned at Emirates Stadium, football is still played on a pitch rather than paper.

That remains a source of frustration for Mikel Arteta and collective efforts to come back into contention for top-four finishes and the most prestigious of trophies. Champions League betting odds at Paddy Power have not involved Arsenal since 2016-17, although prices are shortening on a possible return to that top table being made next season.

If the Gunners are to get over that line and earn favor again alongside domestic rivals such as Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool in Paddy Power Champions League tips, then everyone has to start pulling in the same direction.

For Ghana international Partey, that means delivering on the expectation that took him to north London. If he can perform at a consistent level for a prolonged period of time, then Arsenal have themselves quite the player.

Brilliance

There have been flashes of that brilliance so far, but one step forward has all too often been countered by a couple in the opposite direction. Untimely stints on the treatment table have done little to aid that cause.

Partey has been fit and firing of late, though, and boasts the full support of an ambitious manager and talented team-mates. When he has been available, his has been one of the first names on the team sheet.

That tells you plenty about how highly a proven performer is rated in the English capital, with no indication that patience will start wearing thin.

Time is, however, a commodity afforded to few in modern football and Partey has been around long enough to know that he has to produce. Promise is all well and good, but it counts for little in a world where points and prizes are king.

Arsenal invested heavily in another motor for their engine room and have seen enough to convince them that their selection of choice can drive them forwards towards bigger and better things. The only issue at the moment is how often said mechanism performs at full throttle.

The horse power is there, though, and the Gunners remain a side that will take some stopping if inconsistency is ironed out and a winning formula is found. They are far from being the only team searching for those intangibles, but they are better placed than most to succeed.

At their heart they have a man who is determined to prove that he was the right recruitment call and no expensive flop that needs adding to a list that is already far too long.

Thomas can be a talisman and it is time for him to get the Partey started.
